It’s that time again. Yet another Nintendo Direct is underway, but this latest edition doesn’t concern the Nintendo Switch.
Instead, Nintendo is granting fans an in-depth look at the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
It’s incredibly impressive how quickly the film has come together, landing just a couple of years after its predecessor.
You have to assume a sequel was always the plan; Netflix, in contrast, recently announced their Kpop Demon Hunters sequel would take four years to produce, targeting a 2029 release.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is, of course, inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy games with the Direct having already brought us a trailer.

A short teaser surfaced earlier this year but now we’ve been granted a full look at this latest caper which sees Mario venture off into space.
The story will centre around Princess Rosalina, our cosmic protector, and Bowser Jr. who seeks out his missing father.
Alongside that, Nintendo also announced some fresh casting for the film.
Brie Larson and Benny Safdie join the cast
Nintendo has revealed that Brie Larson will be portraying Princess Rosalina whilst Benny Safdie will bring Bowser. Jr to life.
I’m already so on board with both of these castings.
Brie Larson is a total sweetheart and also a major Nintendo super fan, which you’ll know if you subscribe to her YouTube channel.
Over the years, Brie has shared her love for all things Nintendo, from The Legend of Zelda to Animal Crossing, so I’m sure she’s thrilled to be bringing fan-favourite Rosalina to life.
You’ll perhaps know Brie as Captain Marvel in the MCU, or from her Oscar-winning turn in Room.
Benny Safdie will also make for a great pairing with Jack Black.
Benny also has a great back catalogue, with appearances in Oppenheimer, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Licorice Pizza; he’s also a great director.
They join returning cast members including Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, and Charlie Day as Luigi.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie isn’t too far away, with it currently being set to land on 3 April 2026.
Don’t forget that a bundled remastering of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 recently landed on Switch consoles.
If you haven’t yet played this all-time greats, I highly suggest you check the bundle out; you’ll then pick up on the film’s inspirations.
