Super Bowl Reveals Baffling Pokémon Update for an Eye-Watering Cost

All that money and where did it get us?

Pokémon made an appearance at the Super Bowl this year and it’s not one we’re going to forget anytime soon, especially how much it all cost…

To celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, The Pokémon Company paid top dollar to have its beloved pocket monsters appear during the U.S sporting event.

While I’m not into football, I have to say I loved Pokemon launching its new "What's Your Favorite?" campaign during an ad break. Lady Gaga and Jigglypuff signing a duet, drop it on streaming right now.

The advert was part of a new campaign launched by The Pokémon Company all about your favourite Pokémon. Fans can now check out a new site launched for the 30th anniversary and choose your favourite, making a cute little graphic you can share with the world. Check it out here!

It was all very touching but there were still many fans disappointed that the advertisement wasn’t used to promote a new game, or other such announcement.

Even worse is fans have now realised just how much The Pokémon Company spent on that ad-space, and it’s honestly astounding.

Super Bowl ads cost millions to air, especially one-minute long ads like Pokémon paid for. It’s estimated that this year’s Super Bowl ad cost an extraordinary $16-$20 million and that’s just to have it shown. Production costs and getting Lady Gaga to participate probably cost a few million more.

This is even more astonishing when you take into account the budget of the latest Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. In total the game had a budget of around 2 billion yen, which converts to around $13 million.

It’s hard to not feel insulted given how low-quality some of the latest Pokémon games have felt when the company is willing to spend more on a half-time show advertisement. Good job the advert was so charming.

A Wild Showcase Has Appeared…

For those disappointed that no new games were teased, worry not, as there’s still hope for this month.

With Pokémon Day coming on 27 February it’s expected a new Pokémon Presents broadcast will be announced to go with it.

This is when the company tends to make announcements regarding its first-party titles which means we’ll hopefully get a brief glimpse at the Gen 10 games. Full-on gameplay seems unlikely but confirmation the games are called Pokémon Wind & Waves would be nice, as well as a look at the box-art legendaries.
