PS1 Classic Makes Another Surprise Return, 28 Years On From Launch

Revisit an old friend on Nintendo Switch 2

A PlayStation 1 classic has returned, although it’s not the first time that it’s graced us with its presence in recent years.

Tomba! Special Edition is now officially available to purchase on Nintendo Switch 2, 28 years after the game originally launched in 1997.

You may recall that Tomba! Special Edition first made a comeback in 2024 when a remastered version of the game landed on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.

That remaster was put together by Limited Run Games with a similar treatment applied to Tomba! 2 shortly after.

Now, Limited Run has revealed a surprise Switch 2 port of the franchise’s OG title and it’s available to purchase right now for just $19.99.

If you’re not familiar with Tomba!, it’s essentially an action-adventure game that centres around the titular child character.

Tomba is, no offence to him, rather feral and sets about attempting to recover his grandfather’s bracelet from an evil race of anthropomorphic pigs.

The game is actually a product of legendary developer Tokuro Fujiwara who had a stellar run at Capcom in the 80s, working on Commando, Sweet Home, and various Mega Man titles.

In fact, Resident Evil is considered a spiritual successor to Fujiwara’s Sweet Home.

If you do want to pick Tomba! up on Nintendo Switch 2, it’s received some new bells and whistles.

Enjoy Several Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrades

The Switch 2 version of Tomba! Special Edition boosts the game’s resolution and performance with this port featuring higher quality assets. This is accompanied by a “Downsampled Display”.

The differences are subtle, but I’d say you’re much better picking up this version of the game if you can over its 2024 Nintendo Switch counterpart.

As I said, it’s reasonably priced at $19.99, although the port does come with one caveat.

If you already own Limited Run Games’ Tomba! Special Edition on Nintendo Switch, you cannot upgrade to the Switch 2 version.

It appears as if you’ll need to purchase the game again which, fair to say, isn’t very consumer friendly.

This aside, I only have praise for Limited Run Games which has done some incredible work in recent years, bringing classic games of yesteryear to new audiences.

In case you missed it, Limited Run Games’ most recent announcement confirmed that physical copies of 2023’s incredible Hi-Fi Rush! are finally on the way.

Pre-orders are open now for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S copies, with that including a deluxe version of the game as well as three DLC costume packs.
