It looks like we might be getting a new Pokémon type in the upcoming Winds and Waves, or at least, that’s what a rumour has suggested.
The Pokémon series is, without question, one of the most popular properties in all of entertainment, whether it's the video game series, shows on the TV screen, collectable trading cards or adorable LEGO. Put simply, we’re never short of Pokémon goodness to keep us entertained.
During a recent Pokémon Presents digital showcase that celebrated 30 years of the franchise, Pokémon Winds and Waves was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2. While we don't know too much right now, fans are loving the improved graphics and Pombon - the adorable puppy Fire-type starter Pokémon.
We don't know the name of the region, but we do know that its tropical setting will be inspired by Southeast Asia, in particular, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

One thing a reputable industry Pokémon leaker has claimed this new region could bring us is a brand new type of Pokémon to the game.
However, it's a little more complicated than simply 'another Pokémon type', like Fairy was introduced in 2013. Here's what we know so far.
Is a New Pokémon Type Coming to Winds and Waves?
In a tweet from roughly five months ago, reliable Pokémon leaker, Centro Leaks, teased a new type for a 10th-gen game we now know is Pokémon Winds and Waves.
“A baby Pokémon of the Seed species that can be found in resort areas. (Seed Pokémon = unevolved form). It is a rare sight in this land, and no one has ever seen its evolved form. When it travels to the island where the main legendary resides, it begins to evolve. Its evolved appearance is said to have infinite variations.”
This is a bit complicated to get your head around.
One user on Reddit said: "Why do I get the feeling that this Seed pokemon will be like the partner Pikachu/Eevee?"
Another replied: "THANK YOU. I was having trouble wrapping my head around this concept, but there it is. This is like a Baby Mew, or a Proto-Arceus. What GameFreak wants to do is make ALL players start with the same Pokemon, but allow EACH player to evolve it into whatever partner they want for the rest of the game's adventure."
Of course, back in the Tera leak, we heard rumours of Evolotto - a Pokemon that could evolve into anything. One user said: "I feel like i remember a "tera leak" where Pokemon toyed with the idea of a customizable pokemon. So maybe this could be that idea coming to fruition? A starter Pokemon we can raise and decide what stats and type it'll have when it evolves base on how you raise it, possibly? Sounds super interesting."
Of course, we can only speculate exactly what this new Pokémon type will be, but hopefully, we’ll learn in the coming months.
That being said, with Pokémon Winds and Waves only having a tentative 2027 release window, I doubt that Nintendo and developers Game Freak will be in a major hurry right now.
We’ll keep you posted as soon as the official release date for Pokémon Winds and Waves drops for the Nintendo Switch 2.
