It’s looking like you might have trouble securing a Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order, according to a new report.

Nintendo is expected to launch the Switch 2 later this year, with a Direct showing off the hardware and, presumably, some games later this week.

With the original Switch being as popular as it is, becoming one of the bestselling video game consoles of all time, the level of hype surrounding its successor is massive.

So far, we only know about a new Mario Kart coming to the system.

But after this week we could have a whole host of games to get excited for on the Switch 2.

What games are you hoping to see on the Switch 2?

Now, a new report from Insider Gaming says retailers are expecting to run out of Switch 2 pre-order stock on the same day they go live, blaming a shortage of unit allocation from Nintendo.

“Retailers are expecting that they will run out of pre-order units for the Nintendo Switch 2 on day 1, despite Nintendo allegedly accumulating a large quantity for launch,” Insider Gaming reports.

“That’s according to internal emails and documents provided to Insider Gaming from a large US retailer, who are anticipating they will sell out of the Switch 2 on the same day they open up the pre-orders due to a limited unit allocation from Nintendo.”

Additionally, the same report also suggests pre-orders will go live on 9 April, a week after the Nintendo Direct.

Presumably we’ll know a bit more about what games are coming to the platform then, so people can make informed decisions about buying.

As always, take these reports with a grain of salt if they’re not confirmed by official sources.

Hopefully, Nintendo has built up enough stock that we don’t get a repeat of the hardware shortages that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, given how anticipated the Switch 2 has been for the last few years, it’s no wonder retailers are bracing for a stock shortage.

The Nintendo Switch has sold over 150 million units in its lifetime to date, putting it in third place below the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS for the best-selling console of all time.

Only time will tell how well the Switch 2 will manage to sell in its lifetime.
