The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here, and gamers across the world are busily tearing into the box to unveil the newest console out there.
In the first few minutes of owning the new Nintendo system, it’s easy to get distracted by the shininess of it and want nothing more than to get into whatever games you’ve bought.
Fans are urging each other not to ignore the system transfer option for those players who are moving over from the original Switch to the Switch 2.

Reddit is inundated with threads pointing out that if you don’t take action when prompted to transfer your data, the option won’t be available later, unless you factory reset the console.
“This should be made apparent to people, but if you skip the system transfer option in set up, the option is unavailable until you factory reset the console again.”
There is a video within the thread that shows exactly what happens in this case.
It’s noted in some threads that you can move some individual save files over after this initial set up, however, if you’ve been playing on Switch for a number of years, you’ll likely have a lot to move and taking this time will save you hassle in the future.

A helpful Redditor has explained the situation further, saying, “Not all data is transferable manually. If you want all your data on Switch 2 you'll need to use the system transfer feature.”
Fans are quick to point out that using cloud save data is an option here, but of course, you need to be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber to take advantage of this feature.
Once you’ve moved through this initial install, you should have all your data from the old console and be ready to pick up where you left off.
