Nintendo gamers can claim these Super Mario freebies that include his trusty brother Luigi and the villainous Bowser. But claim them before it’s too late.
When it comes to popular video game characters, it probably doesn't get more iconic than Mario, the frontman of the Super Mario series and the poster boy of Nintendo.
The first game in the Super Mario series is Super Mario Bros., released on the NES in 1985, and since that time, he’s been one of the most recognisable mascots of the entertainment industry. This is despite making his debut in the 1981 arcade game, Donkey Kong.
Over the years, Super Mario has starred in a plethora of video games across multiple generations from the SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii U and much more. His most recent appearance, at the time of writing, is in Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch 2.

“Mario Kart World might not be quite as easy to recommend as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe yet, but it’s still an absolutely fantastic kart racer that’s just as chaotic, imaginative, and vibrant as its predecessors,” said GAMINGbible alumni Ewan in his review, scoring it an 8/10.
“Knockout Tour alone has ensured I’ll be playing for a long-old time yet, even if it does have me swearing like a sailor who just stubbed his toe. Savour the rage of second place, it’s how you know you’re alive.”
As for a main entry in the Super Mario series for the Nintendo Switch 2, the giant Japanese developer is keeping us waiting, for now.
However, we at least have the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Movie out next year with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
That being said, that hasn't stopped Nintendo from sharing the Super Mario video game love, as reflected by these stunning Nintendo Switch Online icons, which you can give a home for free this Christmas.
As shared on the Twitter account, ‘NSO Icon Alerts’, you can claim a variety of Super Mario-themed icons from the series featuring its instantly recognisable cast of characters and power-ups.
To claim the free Nintendo Switch Online icons, you’ll have to spend your Platinum coins, which are free Nintendo currency that can be earned by completing surveys and whatnot.
These icons (and frames) will only be available until 15 December 2025, at which time, a new batch of icons will appear.
To claim the icons, simply visit the ‘Missions & Rewards’ section via the home screen of your Nintendo Switch console and get spending. Easy peasy.
As for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, that’s currently scheduled to be released in cinemas on 3 April 2026.
That’s assuming it doesn't get delayed.
