Nintendo has dropped some new freebies for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 users just in time for Halloween.
Regardless of what platform you’re playing on at the moment there are plenty of spooky treats to be had.
Storefronts like PlayStation and Steam are offering huge discounts on horror titles at the moment but you’d be forgiven for thinking Nintendo doesn’t really bother with that sort of thing. You’d also be right but that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t join in every now and then.
This week Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 users can claim some free Halloween-themed icons featuring some of the Super Mario series’ most iconic characters.

A total of eight icons are up for grabs right now, featuring; Mario with a pumpkin on his head, Luigi as a werewolf, Peach as a witch, Toad trick-or-treating as a ghost, Yoshi in a dragon costume, a Blooper wrapped in mummy bandages, a Cheep Cheep with a witch hat and finally a Dry Bones with a pumpkin for a head.
They’re very cute, and can be added to your user profile for free as they cost platinum points, which can also be acquired by completing simple challenges and playing certain games, no purchase required.
Each icon costs around 10 points, and you probably have a fortune saved up already. It’s worth remembering though platinum points can be spent on actual real-life products via the Nintendo Store.
As a Super Mario fan though I’m looking at this line-up and thinking: “This is great, but a Blooper and a Cheep Cheep? Seriously?”

Nintendo wanted some of its Mario characters to represent the Halloween spirit and it didn’t go with Boo or Swoop? Even a Shy Guy would have probably made more sense…

Who You Gonna Call?
That’s not the only Halloween-themed addition Nintendo fans are getting to their consoles though, as later this month a beloved Nintendo GameCube title returns from the dead.

Luigi’s Mansion will join the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service on 30 October, just in time for the big day.
Unfortunately this isn’t much of a freebie as you do need an active membership to play, and for some bizarre reason Nintendo decided to make all GameCube games exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, so if you haven’t upgraded yet you’ll be missing out on this banger.
I’ll be heading back to the mansion this Halloween, it’s tradition.
