Nintendo confirms hefty price increase, brace yourselves

The American government does it again

Nintendo has just announced that several Nintendo Switch products are about to go up in price, and you’ll never guess whose fault it is…

That’s right, folks! It’s time to combine everyone’s two favourite topics: gaming and politics!

As revealed by Nintendo of Canada in an official statement via Newswire (thank you, Eurogamer), a bunch of Nintendo Switch-related products are about to shoot up in price in Canadian territories.

These include standard Nintendo Switch consoles, Nintendo Switch OLED Models, Nintendo Switch Lites, Nintendo Switch accessories, and both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.

However, this doesn’t include Nintendo Switch 2 consoles or games, weirdly. The official statement also noted that “other Nintendo products, including amiibo and Nintendo Switch Online memberships will also experience price changes” though, so it’s likely that this could have a knock-on effect for those that do own Nintendo Switch 2s.

Also, I’m not entirely sure how this would affect purchasing digital Nintendo Switch titles on a Nintendo Switch 2, but I’d wager that they’ll see a price increase across all Nintendo platforms.

No need to guess, however, as Nintendo of Canada stated that “Pricing information specific to the Canadian market will be shared” on 1 August via the official Canadian Nintendo site, which is also assumedly when these price increases will go into effect.

So, what’s the reason for these price increases? You guessed it: “market conditions”!

That’s a roundabout way of saying that this is due to the recent breakdown in talks regarding tariffs between America and Canada, with Donald Trump stating that he had ceased all trade negotiations with Canada “immediately” as of Friday last week.

By the sounds of things, these price increases are very much set in stone, so don’t expect Nintendo to walk back on these increases like they did last time. Might be a good idea for our Canadian readers to invest in some Nintendo Switch titles they’ve been waiting to grab now, ahead of the price increases next month.
