Nintendo, in all of its wisdom, just decided to give away a new freebie for one of the worst Zelda games they’ve ever made… and fans aren’t entirely sure why.
There are a lot of brilliant Legend of Zelda games. You don’t need me to tell you that, because a few of the entries in the series are often regarded as examples of the best games ever made.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time… I could, very much, go on.
My point is that, given the breadth of incredible titles in the franchise to choose from, it’s a little odd that Nintendo has opted to focus on quite possibly the worst mainline entry in the franchise for its latest giveaway: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

As detailed in an article by Nintendo Life’s Ollie Reynolds, Nintendo just announced that music from both the NES and Famicom Disk System versions of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has been added to the Nintendo Music app, free for all users with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Over in a thread on the r/Nintendo subreddit, reactions to range from excitement to general confusion and apathy.
“Oh nice! Fun fact about this one. The famicom disk system version of the encounter music is different for the Famicom Disk System version”, commented user SparkyMuffin.
“They actually reused this version of the theme for the mini bosses in Minish Cap.”

“A bunch of themes I don't know because I've never played it and the two battle themes I do know purely because of Mario Maker 2”, replied user Troytt4.
Look, I’m sure Zelda II: The Adventure of Link still has its fans, and it’s obviously an important piece of Nintendo’s history regardless, but this seems like an odd game to prioritise when so many other Nintendo games still haven’t featured on the Nintendo Music app.
But hey, at least they went the extra mile and added the Famicom Disk System versions too, because I think they sound way better than what was in the original NES release of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
Hopefully, they follow this up with some new Pokémon tracks, though, because it’s downright criminal to omit so many of the bangers from those games in favour of this.
