Hollow Knight is getting a new-gen refresh, and it might be the best reason to go back and revisit the 2017 indie classic.
Hollow Knight: Silksong has been one of the most successful games of the year, following Team Cherry’s announcement that it has now sold seven million copies since its release in September.
For context, it took the first Hollow Knight two years to reach three million copies sold, before the indie game exploded in popularity during the COVID-19 quarantines.
With Silksong being such a resounding success, Team Cherry is focusing on developing a new free expansion due out next year.

But the Australian developer hasn’t forgotten about the first game either, with fans soon being able to enjoy a current-gen refresh for Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch 2.
Hollow Knight: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition comes with all the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect from a Switch 2 title.

For starters, it’ll have all the features that Silksong received when it first launched, such as high frame-rate modes supporting 120fps, higher resolutions up to 4K, and new graphical effects.
It should put both games on par with each other, as far as technical concerns go.
Hollow Knight: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Will be Free For All Switch Owners
As is the case with Silksong, Hollow Knight players who own the game on Nintendo Switch will get the option to upgrade to the Switch 2 version for free. It’ll simply be a case of receiving a new download when it launches.
That’s not all though, because Team Cherry is also updating the original game across all platforms, which will add new features and fix bugs (insert a joke here about every Hollow Knight enemy being a bug).
While these updates are expected to hit console versions, it’s already available for PC gamers via public beta branches on Steam and GOG.
This update introduces full 16:10 support, which is especially handy for Steam Deck users who don’t want to have black bars cutting off at the top of their displays.
Ultrawide monitor support is also included here with this patch, with full 21:9 resolutions being included too just as Silksong has.
Team Cherry has also outlined several other features coming to Hollow Knight in this housekeeping patch. For example, the game now pauses when you’re in the inventory menu. The developer has also upgraded to Unity Input System, which improves controller support across the board.
