Fallout 4 free new-gen update is leaving fans annoyed

Fallout fans are wondering what happened to the current-gen update for Fallout 4, and their patience is wearing a bit thin.

Last-gen games getting a current-gen upgrade has become a common trend in the gaming industry, with popular examples being CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, which both received huge updates that take advantage of modern hardware.

If you're looking for a good current-gen upgrade, The Witcher 3 is where it's at

In 2022, Bethesda announced that it’d be releasing an upgrade for Fallout 4, saying it’d be similar to Skyrim: Anniversary Editon in the sense it’d include better graphics, better framerates, and bonus features.

The upgrade was supposedly set to release in 2023, but we’re nearing the end of the year now, and there’s been no sign or mention of the update coming out.

It almost seems like Bethesda has no intention of delivering the promised update, possibly hoping the release of Starfield has made fans forget it was ever promised in the first place.

Reddit user The_Only_Jason_2020 certainly remembered as they asked the Fallout community: “Whatever happened to the Fallout 4 next-gen console update the people were talking about? Just curious since I haven’t heard anyone talk about this since like around June.”

Fans chimed in with their own ideas and theories as to where the update has gone, with some believing Bethesda are saving it for a rainy day, or at least a relevant time to launch it.

“Betting it is being saved for the Fallout TV show, and they are hoping for a Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk-like feedback loop.”

“There was a tweet about how they were busy with Starfield releasing. I assume they resumed work on it after that.”

“It's likely that they will wait until the fallout TV show is out to capitalize on its hype. From a marketing perspective, they want people buying Starfield right now, so it doesn't make sense financially to release a product that would rival it so quickly.

“It sucks for us, of course, but you always have to think of what will make the most profit, and that will usually be the answer.”

As Fallout fans grow more impatient by the day, we can only hope the delayed Fallout 4 upgrade is actually worth the wait, and not just a mediocre reskin.
