The day that the servers are turned off on any live service endeavour is always a sad one, regardless of how you feel about the overall product. People lose hours, or even hundreds of hours, of their lives and efforts once things shut down for the final time. Such is the way of our increasingly server-driven world.
Unfortunately, one of the biggest MMORPGs of the last five years is about to do just that, and it won't come as a surprise to too many, given the player numbers trending significantly downwards over the last few years.
New World: Aeternum was Amazon's attempted to reboot the MMO of the same name back in 2024, but it seems that their strategy hasn't managed to bring players back on board in any meaningful way. I had a few good hours in it, but I must say, it didn't hook me.
Now, we have confirmation of exactly when the game will be going away for the final time, and it doesn't give players too long to make some lasting memories.

New World: Aeternum to Shut Down Forever in 2027
In a lengthy post on the official New World website, the developer shared the following with their player base.

“New World: Aeternum will officially be taken offline from all platforms on January 31, 2027. On January 15, 2026, the title will be delisted and no longer available for purchase. Players will still be able to play New World: Aeternum on their purchased platform, and we are extending the Nighthaven season until the servers are taken offline on January 31, 2027.”
“We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special. While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community."
It's undeniably a pretty tragic end for a game that seemingly had all the momentum when it first launched back in 2021. It brought with it a pretty unique style and impressive gameplay, but it failed to get its hooks into players en-masse and the player count started to dwindle pretty quickly.
In a slightly bizarre decision, you will still be able to buy in game currency moving forward until 20 June, when that feature will also go away.

It's a particularly galling announcement because the game semi-recently released arguably it's best update ever, which did draw some players back in, but given overall market conditions right now, it's clear that Amazon Games felt that this was no longer an avenue worth pursuing.
