Netflix's live-action One Piece debuts with near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

One Piece on Netflix is proving to be a hit with fans of the anime.

It’s fair to say that video game-to-live adaptations have had somewhat of a torrid history.

More often than not, fans will begin with high hopes. Yet, from the original Super Mario Bros. movie of 1993 to the live-action Resident Evil series from Netflix, video game enthusiasts have every reason to be sceptical and for the most part, anime fans often find themselves in a similar boat. Take, for example, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop which was cancelled after just one season.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop earned just 46% from critics. However, it did fare slightly better from fans garnering a somewhat more respectable score of 60%.

Naturally, it stands to reason that fans may also be wary when it comes to another beloved anime that has received the Netflix live-action makeover treatment and the anime in question is One Piece.

This beloved anime series is not only one of the most cherished, but prolific too with over 1,000 episodes at the time of writing. That being said, with so much source material to rely on, if there’s one anime product that has a recipe for success it's One Piece. Still, despite its potential, a formula for success is never a guarantee.

Thankfully, fans can rest assured knowing that Netflix may have got this particular live-action adaptation right. As of right now, One Piece has scored 83% from critics and an all-mighty score of 96% from the audience. What’s more, One Piece has also earned a very respectable score of 8.5/10 on IMDB.

“Much better than expected. It follows its source material and even adds a few of its own twists and plot sequences which makes it familiar yet also refreshing in reflection to the manga and anime versions,” exclaimed ArsalonX.

“Best anime adaptation that has ever been released, you can tell love and care went into this show and that it was made by fans. Most of the changes from the source material were good and the actors were all great fits for their roles. It’s a must-watch and I’m excited for season two.” rejoiced Alex A.

“It’s a dream come true. It is always beautiful to see a cartoon become a movie, this one is better than ever expected. Great job,” said a very happy Andrea C. “Best live-action anime and amazing show hands down!” adds Brian V.

One Piece is available to stream now on Netflix and hopefully, with its debut season being so well received, season two is set in stone.
