Netflix subscribers livid as fan favourite series cancelled, left on cliffhanger

The petition now has over 54,000 signatures.

News broke that Netflix has chosen to cancel Fate: The Winx Saga and fans are all worked up because the second season ended on a cliffhanger that will now never be resolved.

Fate: The Winx Saga is an adaptation of Winx Club, the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon in the early '00s, for young adults. It's set in a world where magical creatures are real, and fairies enrol at a school called Alfea in order to hone their powers and fight against the threat of the Burned Ones.

While the show spent three weeks in the top 10 of Nielsen's US streaming charts for original shows when it released its first season in January 2021, the second season did not see the same success. Netflix's own data confirmed that worldwide subscribers spent about 161 million hours on the second season in the month following its September 2022 release. Usually, its own shows should have surpassed the 100 million hour mark in one week alone.

It's clear that the team were as surprised by the announcement as the fans are, seeing that there are a number of narrative threads that were left hanging in the final episode. Bloom is trapped in the Realm of Darkness in order to seal it from the other side, Beatrix was killed in the battle, Flora is suffering with an unhealed wound from the Scrappers, and Musa, Aisha, Stella and Sky are rebuilding what was lost.

"This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same," said showrunner Brian Young in a post to Instagram. "It’s been an amazing four years. Hopefully we’ll see each other again in the future." Fans are already attempting to reverse the outcome with a petition, with over 54,000 signatures at the time of writing, and even suggesting that the third season could be repurposed into a movie. There's a lot of love for the show so here's hoping that the tides turn.
