Netflix is ditching its oldest original series

Netflix's first ever original series will soon leave the streaming platform for good.

Like the vast majority of us, I’m a big fan of Netflix but the streamer does have one habit I cannot stand: It’s penchant for cancellations. Netflix has garnered somewhat of a reputation for cancelling its own original shows. A success one minute and cancelled the next. That’s increasingly becoming the life cycle of Netflix originals.

There’s a few shows we can rely on. I can’t see Stranger Things or Squid Game disappearing anytime soon but I was particularly peeved by the cancellation of The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. Anyone else? Just me? Back to the point though: Today, Netflix is dropping its first ever original series.

Looking for a spooky Netflix watch for Halloween? Check out the trailer for the recently released The Midnight Club which contains the most jumpscares in a single episode of television ever.

It’s probably not a show you’ve heard of but Lilyhammer was Netflix’s first ever original series - released on the service all the way back in 2012. If you could see me right now, you’d notice that as I say original, my hands gesture air quotes. Netflix labelled the show as such but the streamer simply purchased the streaming rights to this Norwegian drama - much like Riverdale is labelled as an original but is in fact made for The CW. I’m really showing my love of teen melodrama off in this article, huh.

Anway, Lilyhammer ran for three seasons, drawing to a close in 2014. Since then, it’s remained available to watch on the streamer but that’ll soon end on 20 November as Netflix’s hold on the US streaming rights is ending. It’s hardly shocking that Netflix isn’t vying to renew. Lilyhammer isn’t a major title, but it does mark the end of an era.

In other Netflix related news, the streamer recently revealed that the newest ad tier would launch next month allowing users to opt for a cheaper payment plan. The tier is released as Netflix continues to crackdown on password sharing.
