More Spider-Man Spin-offs, Including 'Venom 3', Officially Announced

The Venom films have made Sony more than a billion dollars at the box office.

While Disney owns Marvel and many of the films within its cinematic universe, your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man movies still belong to Sony.

As reported by Comic Book, it was at Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon 2022, which took place in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas on April 25, that the company revealed a number of films it is planning to release. With the popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home it’s unsurprising that Sony would want to focus on the web-slinging superhero. One of the Spider-Man spin-off films announced was a third film in the Venom series.

You can check out our interview with Gollum actor and Venom 2 director Andy Serkis in the video below.

The first two Venom films, titled Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, starred Tom Hardy as the titular villain. While they were both critically panned by critics, they appeared to be popular with audiences. The first film pulled in over $850 million at the box office, while the second made over $500 million, making both huge financial successes for Sony.

The second Spider-Man-based film announced is a new property featuring a Mexican wrestler from the comic books named el Muerto. Comic Book reports that Puerto Rican wrestler and rapper Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, has been hired for the role of el Muerto in the unnamed project.

The wrestler makes just two appearances in the comics. In the first he approaches J. Jonah Jameson to set up a charity wrestling match against Spider-Man. Jameson complies in hopes that Spider-Man will be unmasked and his identity known. Following the match the pair team up in an attempt to take down a shared nemesis.

The next Spider-Man film, the animated Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse with Miles Morales featured as the central Spider-Man, is scheduled to release on 7 October this year.
