It really is tough to know just how many implications that the sale of Warner Bros. to Netflix will have for the wider entertainment industry, but it’s safe to say that the landscape will likely never quite look the same again.
The sale of the company is looking more and more like it’s going to be complete and total, with the sale price coming in at a staggering figure somewhere north of $82 billion.
That includes the entirety of the gaming division at WB, which has grown to become quite significant over the last few years, including Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios, known for the Arkham games, as well as the immensely successful Hogwarts Legacy (and its pending sequel).
Arguably one of the most well received IPs in Warner Bros. history, however, are the Middle-earth games, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, who are back in the discussion around the sale thanks to one particular feature that has been in the proverbial doldrums for some time.

The Nemesis System Has to Return
Those of you who have played the game will undoubtedly remember the Nemesis system, as it defined much of the gameplay loop in both games and really served as one of the biggest selling points.
If you don’t know what it is, it essentially served as a living, breathing social system that saw your actions have real world consequences for the orcs you were up against.
As an example, if you killed one, that orc’s blood brother may seek vengeance. If he’s able to get it and kill you off, he’ll likely get a promotion and some new abilities, or maybe even a nickname.
It's absolutely one of the biggest technological strides made in gaming over the last decade or more, but thus far, we have only ever seen it used in those two games, with Warner Bros. preferring to covet it and not use it elsewhere.
The upcoming sale of the company may well have quite a few negative effects, but one of the major potential positives is a change of direction for the Nemesis system, where hopefully it can be used in new and interesting games.
Obviously it is still fairly early on in the process, so we don’t really know what Netflix is planning to do with any of the game franchises they now find themselves managing. That said, they will want to recoup money, and fast, so reintroducing the nemesis system to the world could be a great way of doing that.
