Microsoft says the Xbox VS PlayStation war is over - and it lost

Will the console war ever truly end? I sure hope so. It may not be as prevalent as it once was, but Microsoft and Sony aren’t the best friends they pretend to be. You need look no further than Microsoft’s current attempted acquisition of Activision. The past couple of month’s have been plagued by playground bickering as Microsoft and Sony debate the future of Call of Duty.

Back in July, former Xbox executive Peter Moore revealed that Xbox actually stoked the fire of the console war to drive competition. For the average gamer though, I’d like to imagine we’ve all moved on. I enjoy PlayStation games. I enjoy Xbox games. The big corps just can’t let it go though. Microsoft has brought the ol’ console war argument up, yet again.

Around the world, industry regulators continue to scrutinise Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, prompting Microsoft to remind the EU’s European Commission that PlayStation are still the gaming market leaders. As reported by Android Authority, the European Commission is wary of the deal.

In a press release, the European Commission wrote, “The Commission’s preliminary investigation shows that the transaction may significantly reduce competition on the markets for the distribution of console and PC video games,” adding that they were particularly worried that Microsoft would “foreclose access” to certain games. In other words, make them exclusive.

Replying to this, Microsoft told The Verge that Sony is still “the industry leader,” seemingly conceding in the so-called console wars. Truthfully, Microsoft could just be saying that to push the deal through after recently confessing that they didn’t expect it to face so much scrutiny. Microsoft’s CEO is confident the acquisition will eventually go through though.
