Those Max Payne remakes can wait, as there’s a swanky new remaster available for the original game out now.
Max Payne is a pretty timeless game. The gritty noir storytelling and badass slow-motion shooting makes for a great combination, and it’s still fun to play in 2025.
While we’re waiting on Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games to release the official remakes for the first two Max Payne games, we’ll just have to bide our time by replaying the originals over and over again.
Now, a new fan-made mod has given the original Max Payne a modern facelift, introducing RTX Remix Path Tracing to the game. Not that the game needed it, but it’s certainly interesting to see it in a brand new light.

The new RTX Remix mod for Max Payne lets you play the entire game with new hand-placed path tracing effects.
It also attempts to ensure that the original game’s art style is kept intact as much as possible, avoiding the uncanny valley feel a lot of RTX Remix mods have.
A video posted onto ModDB showcases the mod in action.

I have to say, it looks incredible considering the age of the game. It’s great to see that it is still fully playable, too.
These new effects are supported across every chapter in the game, but there are some issues. For example, you may need to go back to the default game lights for Chapters 4, 5, and 6 at the moment due to some glitches.
Meanwhile, hand-crafted PBR materials can be found in the Roscoe Street Station level (along with a brand new model and texture for the train), but future updates to the mod will add these to the rest of the game.
You can download V0.1 of Max Payne: Remix from ModDB now, and be sure to keep your eye out for more updates in the future.
