Mass Effect fans surprised with new release for spiritual sequel Exodus

You know that saying about the "grass always being greener"?

Exodus, a sci-fi RPG that's being developed by Archetype Entertainment, has been mostly light on updates following its initial reveal at The Game Awards last year.

The initial trailer did generate a bit of buzz when it dropped, but not because of its content or the fact that Matthew McConaughey voices one the game's characters. People were mostly excited that Archetype Entertainment were taking on a sci-fi game, as many of the staff members are ex-BioWare employees.

Archetype Entertainment was founded back in 2019 by Wizards of the Coast, best known as the publishers for Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

The developer employs several ex-BioWare heavy hitters, such as Chad Robertston (who worked on Dragon Age: Inquisition and Star Wars: The Old Republic), James Ohlen (who worked as Lead Designer and Creative Director on titles like Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate), and Drew Karpyshyn (Lead Writer on both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2).

Naturally, a team of ex-BioWare staffers announcing that they're working on a sci-fi game got Mass Effect fans across the globe pumped - and the new trailer for the game is igniting that passion for a second time.

The "Green Worlds" trailer is already giving people hope that Exodus can live up to the hype that the pedigree of its developers has set for it. Or, as one one comment puts it, "Please fill that Mass Effect-sized hole in my heart".

It's hard to say if the developers at Archetype Entertainment are too thrilled with being constantly compared to their former place of work, but it's to be expected. BioWare fans have been desperate for something new from the developer for a while now, especially following flops like Anthem.

Here's hoping Exodus lives up to the expectations the fans have already placed on it. Hard to see how it wouldn't, given the talent behind the project. There is currently no release date in sight though, so who knows how long it'll take for us to find out.
