It’s been a little while since we heard some news on Exodus, the Mass Effect-inspired RPG coming from former BioWare developers.
Originally revealed at The Game Awards 2023, we’ve seen some snippets of Exodus on-and-off over the years.
But with a release confirmed for 2027, it sounds like Archetype Entertainment is finally letting loose on more details, thanks to a bunch of new snippets released for the game over the past few weeks.
The latest video, titled “Deep in Ghost City”, shows off main character Jun Aslan and his crew exploring the titular Ghost City, located under Lidon.

Only lasting around one minute and 20 seconds, the video shows Jun exploring the city by jumping over gaps in the architecture, grappling across wide ridges, and destroying debris which blocks off doorways and paths.

It looks like exploration won’t be open-world, but instead utilised in large open environments with multiple routes and areas to explore. You’ll have many options for exploring, but there’ll still be a rough linear path for you to follow.
Halfway through the video, we see some combat where Jun engages in some shooting against an enemy faction in a tight area, where he faces gunfire from several different angles.
It’s here where we see some of his gear in action. At one point, Jun fires a large spike which burrows underground before sending an enemy flying in the air.
The video also does a good job of demonstrating certain HUD elements and gameplay systems, looking like an eclectic mix of the RPG and shooter genres.
Overall, it seems like it’ll be a busy game, but RPG fans familiar with BioWare’s history should have a good grasp on how it plays.
It looks like the game is going to play very similarly to Mass Effect, which makes sense considering Archetype is made up of former BioWare developers James Ohlen, Chad Robertson, and Drew Karpyshyn.
It also stars Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey in his video game debut, playing a character called C.C. Orlev.
McConaughey himself appeared at The Game Awards in 2023 to present the game, and his voice can be heard in “The Mara Yama” trailer.
The blurb on Exodus reads: “EXODUS is a sci-fi action-adventure RPG where you become the Traveler—leading humanity’s fight for survival against the Celestials. Face our evolution 40,000 years in the future, explore extraordinary worlds, and confront time itself to shape the fate of generations.”
Exodus is set for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2027. If you'd like to experience the world of Exodus before the game comes out, you can also read the prequel novel, Exodus: The Archimedes Engine by Peter F. Hamilton, which came out in 2024.
