While we’re still waiting on news about Mass Effect 5, let’s talk about what we know so far, including its expected release date, that trailer and more.

Much like outer space, information on the next Mass Effect game from BioWare is one of life’s many mysteries, and despite being one of the most beloved sci-fi RPG’s of all time and being revealed years ago, we know very little about the highly anticipated title. We'll update this page as and when new information comes in, so make sure to bookmark it and check back for all the latest Mass Effect updates.

When was Mass Effect 5 Announced?

Mass Effect 5 was announced by developers BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts as the final reveal at The Game Awards in December 2020. It's been 5 years, and there hasn't been a major update since, despite little teases from BioWare every N7 Day which, aptly, lands on 7 November.

One thing we do know - the next game isn't actually called “Mass Effect 5”, and was officially revealed as the next Mass Effect. But seeing as this is the fifth major entry since 2017’s Mass Effect Andromeda, it feels natural to refer to it that way until we have added confirmation on its final title.

What Mass Effect 5 Trailers Have We Seen So Far?

Other than the initial reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2020 featuring Liara T'Soni, as well as a tease that the crew of the SSV Normandy SR-2 may have survived Mass Effect 3, we’ve only had a follow-up trailer tease for N7 day featuring a mysterious figure (who to me looks to have major Liara T'Soni swag), and that was on 7 November 2023.

When Did Mass Effect 5 Development Begin?

It’s widely believed that Mass Effect 5 is now the full focus of BioWare after entering proper production following the release of 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

“As far as I can tell, 100% of what they’re working on is Mass Effect. That’s probably for the best,” said BioWare executive Mark Darrah during an interview in January 2026.

What’s the Story of Mass Effect 5?

Much like anything else, the story for Mass Effect 5 is mostly guesswork at this time. Judging by the previous two teaser trailers, it looks like it will be heavily inspired by the events of Mass Effect 3. However, it will be interesting to see if Mass Effect Andromeda is acknowledged.

Will Multiple Choice Dialogue and Romance Options Feature?

I think we’d all be shocked if Mass Effect 5 moved away from its multiple-choice dialogue and romance options, a staple of the series that can drastically impact your campaign story.

That being said, with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund expecting to own a vast majority controlling 93.4% stake of EA, following a $55 billion acquisition in September 2025, some of those elements may be unclear.

In Saudi Arabia, engagement in same-sex activity is illegal and can be punishable by death. Much like the Dragon Age series, Mass Effect has strong LGBT themes. If those options aren't present in the next game, will it even feel like Mass Effect? Only time will tell.

Does Mass Effect 5 Have a Release Date?

At the time of writing, no, Mass Effect 5 does not have a release date. Many expect it to arrive towards the end of the 2020s, and if that’s the case, it will be a next-gen title.

Of course, most of what is said in this article is based on speculation, so we should take it with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. As always, we’ll keep you posted when we hear further developments on the progress of Mass Effect 5 or whatever it will be called.
