We all remember the days of scrolling down to the 90s section when signing up for a social media website or getting our parents to head into the local game shop when we were underage. These tricks seem to be common practice as the majority of Grand Theft Auto V fans admit to being under 18 the first time they played the Rockstar title.
Released in 2013, GTA 5 was, as you can probably expect, rated 18+ and Mature all over the world. Including profanity, violence, crime, drugs, sex and other mature themes, it wasn’t the most family friendly game much like the previous instalment in the Grand Theft Auto series. However, in a recent Reddit poll asking people to “be honest” about what age they were when they first played GTA 5, 2.6k people admitted they were under 18. In comparison, only 828 people claimed to have been of age.

Personally, I was sixteen myself but after already being desensitized to violence due to growing up with a tv license, it wasn’t a big deal for me. This seems to be the common consensus for the gamers who headed to Reddit to share their experiences. However, one user reveals “My dad let me drive around a bit when I was 10 but didn't let me actually play it until I was 15”. Another claims that although they were of age in 2013, they played their first Grand Theft Auto game when they were 9.

As you can probably expect, talk soon turned to whether or not these landslide results were a result of “bad parenting”. One user commented “I feel pretty conflicted on this. I played a lot of violent videogames as a kid, including GTA, but I don't know if I would let my kid (if I ever have one) play games unsupervised like I did, especially since they're much more realistic.”
No matter the result, it will be interesting to see how they vary ten years later with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
