The Legend of Zelda fans were blessed in 2024 with the release of the Great Deku Tree LEGO set, a premium kit but one perfect for lifelong enjoyers of the series and collectors.
It could be built in two different ways, one based on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and the other from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It was pricey but a brilliant set, and it’ll soon be followed up by a new set featuring Ganondorf.
Now if you fancied getting this set for yourself but the price put you off keep reading, as there's a cheeky workaround and we'll even help you track down the deal for yourself.
Turns out you can build your very own Deku Tree out of a completely different set, and while it’ll still cost you, it’s nowhere near as expensive as the official one.

Zelda fan Minute_Food_2881 shared their own creation on Reddit. Taking the pieces found in the LEGO Bonsai Tree set you can make a surprisingly accurate depiction of the Great Deku Tree from both Ocarina of Time and Tears of the Kingdom. The latter has cherry-blossom leaves instead of the classic green, something the Bonsai Tree set also has.

Think I might need to desconstruct my LEGO Deku Tree and give this a go!
If you want to have a go at building this yourself Minute_Food_2881 has shared the recipe online, for a small fee of course. But considering the savings, it's well worth it.
Feels like a worthy trade though considering the Great Deku Tree set retails for around $299.99/£259.99, whereas the Bonsai Tree only costs around $50/£45.
That’s an enormous saving regardless of where you live in the world.
The only downsides are you’ll be missing out on the official minifigures that come with the set, as well as the decorative pieces that help set scene like the Master Sword pedestal. If that's a huge issue for you, you could always keep an eye on reselling site BrickLinks and pick them up individually.
The Bonsai Tree variant will also be a little smaller than the official one, but on the flipside it’ll be easier to store/display. I had to buy this cabinet specifically for this, and I already need another one@
It all comes down to your personal preference. I’ve got the official Great Deku Tree set and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but there’s no denying LEGO prices are getting harder and harder to justify.
Just look at the newly announced Pokemon sets and you’ll see what I mean.
For those on a budget this is not only a cost-effective solution, but also a very creative one.
