As live service games go, League of Legends has generally been on a bit of an upward trend throughout its considerable life span, though with some notable lows over the last fifteen or more years.
Part of its strength has been the ability to evolve with the times, adding new champions and changing gameplay mechanics to keep the experience fresh as we move from season to season.
The overall package is helped significantly by the thriving pro scene the game has managed to cultivate, with timeless pros like Faker drawing huge viewership for tournaments like the World Championship.
Despite all that success, it's never sensible to rest on your proverbial laurels, and it seems some earth-shattering changes are on the way that could change everything we've grown to love about the game.

Riot Games Planning Huge League of Legends Overhaul
According to a new report published by Bloomberg, developer Riot Games is planning a huge overhaul of the beloved MOBA in 2027 known as League Next.

Whilst this will absolutely be an update to the existing game, rather than something totally new, it's difficult to overstate just how ambitious they are planning to be with this next step in the game's history.
Though specific details are still a little thin on the ground at this point, and likely still yet to be firmed up internally, the update will feature a full revamp of the games characters, UI and maps, in what essentially amounts to a full remake / remaster.
There is no word yet on whether they will also be implementing an equivalent amount of mechanical changes, but it's safe to say that it will likely be quite different to play by the time all is said and done with League Next.
To give you an idea of how significant the update is set to be, it's supposedly going to be the biggest set of updates to the game in its 18-year history (which is how old it will be at the start of 2027).
That means it'll be more ambitious than the 2014 Summoner's Rift update, which changed much about the game's main map, as well as the Season 4 patch, which brought in Trinkets and Gold stacking Support items.
There hasn't been any official word from Riot Games on the update just yet, but given we aren't even in 2026 just yet, we'll likely have to hold on for a little while to hear their plans for 2027.
