Cloudflare has quietly become one of the most important infrastructures on the internet, as was so starkly evidenced over the last few hours when it went down, causing major outages across the internet.
Everything from Letterboxd to Twitter/X has been hit in some way, as the wider community scrambles for a way to access their favourite sites.
One of the live service games that has been most negatively affected is League of Legends, with players across most of the game's regional servers causing significant issues.
If you don't know, League of Legends is one of the most competitive MOBAs out there and the players in the higher ranks take their pursuit of greatness very seriously. If you get disconnected from a game, you are liable to lose ranking points (known as LP in-game), even if it isn't really your fault and you have a router fault, or something similar.

Well, now reports have begun to spring up all over the place confirming that players who otherwise have solid internet connections are being booted out of ranked games during the Cloudflare outage. To add insult to injury, those players are also being hit with a ranking point loss, despite this being caused by factors far beyond their control.
League of Legends Players Want Their LP Back

Over on Reddit, a thread confirming the downtime was filled with ranked players who all had one demand for Riot Games - give us back our LP and do it quickly..

"I got a penalty because I got disconnected and failed to reconnect after hero pick. Stupid Riot. EDIT : FYI don't queue again. wait until the server is stable. I just got into game and 6 people dc. 3 on my team and 3 from enemy team. So we decided to remake and I'm probably gonna wait until tomorrow," one read.
"Dude I lost 27 LP and a penalty will they compensate? The enemy team also had 3 AFKs," another added.
"I lost 31LP because of this. Hopefully they give some LP back," a third confirmed.
The reason for the disconnections likely gives them a solid case to get what their asking for, according to the game's own terms of service.

Whenever everything does come back online, Riot Games will inevitably have to issue a response in an attempt to placate upset players. Whether that means LP refunds or something else, we'll have to wait and see.
