The Last of Us’ first episode has finally premiered on HBO and let me tell you, I have had a very fun morning scrolling through the abundance of reactions that are making up my Twitter feed. Who knew that even a devastating show like The Last of Us could spawn so many entertaining memes? Let’s circle back to that word though, ‘devastating.’

Last week, critics branded The Last of Us “the greatest video game adaptation ever made” in a series of rave views. Even The Last of Us Part II’s director confessed that the show may be better than the game itself. The premiere episode is now proving why. Before we proceed, this article will be addressing major spoilers pertaining to the first episode. You know exactly which scene I’m talking about and if you don’t, let me just leave you with the phrase “baby girl.”

If you enjoyed the first episode, take a look at this brand new trailer teasing what’s to come in the weeks ahead.

I could only be talking about Sarah’s death. It’s a heartbreaking moment in the game and if you ask me, it was even more devastating in the show. Expanding on the game, we see the entirety of Sarah’s day leading up to the outbreak which simply gives us more time to fall in love with the character and her relationship with Joel. When she ultimately meets her demise, trust me when I say that I was bawling - but I’m not alone.

Fans took to the internet to share just how heart-shattering they found Sarah’s death scene to be. Autistichelaena wrote, “I cried over Sarah’s death the first time I played TLOU in June 2020, and I cried over seeing it in the HBO [show] two and a half years later. Damn.” Danathan74 added, “30 mins in and I’m crying. I knew it was coming.” Zach_Farrar14 said, “The opening scene of TLOU hurt just as much as the game.” Take a look at some more reactions below.

I pointed it out in my own review, but it needs to be said again: Nico Parker is fantastic as Sarah. She carries the opening of the show and that’s no easy feat for a series surrounded by so much hype and expectation. Who’s already counting down to next week’s episode?
