The Last of Us fans aren’t even sure if a potential Part 3 is even necessary, as the future of the series is still up in the air.

Last week saw the fifth anniversary of The Last of Us Part 2, and what a five years it’s been. Since then, we’ve had two remasters, a television adaptation for HBO, and even an attraction at Universal Orlando.

Now that Naughty Dog has probably finished re-releasing it, fans are once again speculating about what a potential third entry could involve.

The Last of Us Part 3 hasn’t been announced yet, and Naughty Dog seems very busy with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever come eventually.

“Do you think Part 3 is even necessary, or did Part 2 wrap the story well enough?” wrote a post on Reddit.

Obviously, we’ll put up a spoiler warning here.

“I think the potential for Naughty Dog to round out a trilogy of games in this universe would be too tempting to ignore,” wrote a comment underneath the post.

“There wasn’t much anticipation for Part II before it was announced and people could only speculate on if there would ever be a sequel, but following Part II’s conclusion I think the noise is loud enough that it might have to be made.”

“I've always said that the ending of Part II feels like an intermission,” another comment replied in favour of a sequel. “Ellie's character arc is not complete yet, she needs redemption or further doom.”

“I don't see it. Ellie finally got closure, but it cost her everything. Her arc is complete at this point,” a reply posted underneath.

“She got her redemption by sparing Abby, but the cost was everything she loved. Dina left, took the kid, and she lost her fingers and can't play guitar anymore - the last tie she had to Joel. Now she is free of any burdens that held her back, good or ill.”

We’re excited to see what Naughty Dog is cooking up with Intergalactic, but we’d be lying if we said we’re also secretly hoping for a The Last of Us Part 3 announcement at some point in the next few years.
