‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Days Gone’ Devs Team Up On New Survival Game

Brand new studio Liithos have announced their first game, a survival adventure called Ashfall.

The Last of Us and Days Gone have one thing in common, zombies. Beyond that, these two titles largely offer different experiences. The Last of Us tells a linear narrative, forcing you down predetermined paths whilst Days Gone encourages you to explore its open world.

Imagine what would happen if these two worlds collided. Well, imagine no longer as ex-Naughty Dog and Bend Studio developers have teamed up to create their own studio, Liithos, and they’re working on a brand new survival game.

Naughty Dog are reimagining their 2013 classic. The Last of Us Part 1 launches on 2 September. Take a look at the trailer below.

Michael Mumbauer and John Garvin have teamed up to announce Liithos’ first title, Ashfall. In an announcement, the studio said that “Ashfall will have players fighting to survive a world scarred by global warming, the ignited volcanic Ring-of-Fire, mysterious and disruptive energy fields, and warring enclaves, beginning as a connected Single Player adventure that will evolve into a Multiplayer PVP & PVE cinematic transmedia world.”

It all sounds very promising, but there is one catch. Ashfall is set to utilise cryptocurrency and NFTs. Boooooo. Ashfall will have a “native, energy-efficient cryptocurrency” called HBAR making the game “the first true Web 3.0 AAA title for the PC, console, and the Hedera network.”

Garvin said, “Our goal is to create a truly next-gen, open world experience that engages with new technologies to allow user-generated content. As always, our focus is on creating beloved characters, captivating stories and evolutionary gameplay and a world worth exploring, not just in games, but other media as well.”

It’s no secret that various cryptocurrencies have taken severe knocks in recent weeks and on the whole, it’s a largely unpopular concept - particularly amongst many gamers. Given Mumbauer and Garvin’s experience on some of the most popular games of recent years, Ashfall truly could be an exciting game but given the NFT component, I can’t see this one going down well at all.
