So, we got the official confirmation last week that none other than Lady Gaga will be starring in the Joker sequel, Folie á Deux, seemingly as Harley Quinn.

On the whole, this didn’t really come as a shock announcement - it’d already been rumoured that she’d be starring in the movie. The news has understandably led fans to wonder whether the rumours about the movie being a musical might also be real - it certainly makes a lot more sense to have Gaga on board if so.

Before we get into it, be sure to take a look at this incredible deleted scene from The Batman, featuring Joker.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Joker star Zazie Beetz thinks so, too. The actress, who played Sophie Dumond in the first film, was asked for her thoughts in a recent interview: “I actually think it makes wonderful sense. I wasn’t really surprised by that,” she said. “Todd [Phillips] has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy. And I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me.

“I was going through a really, really difficult time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying by myself. And that was an expression that matched where I was at that moment,” she continued. “And so I can see Arthur [Fleck], who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He’s the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me.”

Joker: Folie á Deux is set to release on 4 October 2024.
