It's good news for DC fans. Injustice 3 isn’t off the table, according to NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon.

Following the beautifully brutal gameplay reveal of Mortal Kombat 1, many fans couldn’t be more hyped for the series reboot. The new title will be kicking off an entirely new era and story for the Mortal Kombat universe, featuring new gameplay mechanics like 'kameo fighters' and graphics powered by Unreal Engine 4.

Take a look at Mortal Kombat 1 in action below.

However, some fans, were left a bit disappointed that we’re receiving another Mortal Kombat game so soon after Mortal Kombat 11. Many fans were hoping the next NetherRealm game would be another entry in the Injustice series, which received its last entry in 2017 with Injustice 2.

Injustice is a fighting-game series that sees popular DC superheroes like Batman, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman clash in 1v1 fights, featuring a similar level of brutality to that seen in the Mortal Kombat games, just without the gore and fatalities. Since the series debuted with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, NetherRealm has alternated releases of Mortal Kombat and Injustice games until now, when it followed up Mortal Kombat 11 with Mortal Kombat 1.

However, there’s still hope for Injustice 3 as creative director Ed Boon recently spoke in an interview with IGN to discuss the absence of the series, and when it might return in the future. Boon said “There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't … But we did go to a new graphics engine, Unreal … We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, 'Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game,' and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.”

When asked if the door had closed on the Injustice series, Boon confidently said, "Not at all”. So there you have it, Injustice 3 is officially still on the table, though it's highly unlikely it’ll be released anytime soon.
