Despite Hogwarts Legacy’s overwhelming financial success, little over a month on from its release, the title’s concurrent player count on PC has fallen off significantly.

Only two weeks after launch, Hogwarts Legacy had already sold over 12 million copies, which drove $850 million in revenue. More recently, one analyst claimed that the game’s revenue has now passed $1 billion, which hasn’t been confirmed by Warner Bros. Games, but would be unsurprising when you consider how much money it’d already racked up in such a short amount of time. Heck, it managed to beat Elden Ring’s lifetime sales in the UK in just five weeks, which is no small feat. This success comes despite the fact that many chose to boycott the game due to its association with J.K. Rowling, who continues to face criticism for making harmful comments about the trans community.

As Game Rant reports, on PC, Hogwarts Legacy’s popularity has plummeted. It only takes one glance at the data from SteamDB to see that the average concurrent player count is far, far lower than it was at launch. Its all-time concurrent player peak was reportedly 879,308 last month whereas at the time of writing, there are 29,593 people playing. Obviously, the number of fans playing will vary throughout the day, but the data from the entirety of last week shows that the peak number was 99,171, which pales in comparison to the figures from launch.

Context is important, so let’s go over that. Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player game, which according to HowLongToBeat, takes around 41 and a half hours to complete if you’re doing the side quests. The main story is only around 25 hours long. Basically, unless players are going for a completionist run (which takes more like 63 hours to complete), most fans who bought the game on release are most likely already done with the title and have moved onto something else, so the drop in players isn't a shock.

It's unlikely that Hogwarts Legacy will lose its momentum any time soon, as it's set to launch on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in the coming months.
