Whether they're giving you quests or simply there to add some flavour to the environment, where there are gaming worlds there are NPCs.
Some lines from NPCs are so repetitive or strange they have become infamous over the years. Would The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim be the same if the guards weren’t constantly telling you "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee”? Where would we be without Pokémon Red and Blue’s infamous friend who just wants to tell you "I like to wear shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear”? Whether you think they are pointless or not, we’ve all had a chuckle at the expense of our non-playable polygons or pixels from time to time.
You can see Adam (aka fun jokez) behave like a real life NPC in the video below.
As if to prove the point that not everything NPCs say is completely normal, one lad, who claims to work as a voice actor, has been walking around in public and talking to people as an NPC. Most people simply ignore him or just respond politely, but the confusion, particularly with older people is very obvious.

Sometimes he’s going around a supermarket helpfully letting people know about the top of the racks, “They keep all sorts of things up there that won’t fit on the shelf.” Other times he scares people with lines sucked straight out of games like “Mother says the rats in the basement are growing in numbers. If only someone had the gall to stop them.”
The weirdest are the cryptic messages NPCs are known for, as he tells random people he encounters “I don’t think now is the time for that” without explaining further. I don’t think I would have the courage to do it, but at least people seem happy to play along.
