GTA 6 Online sounds a lot more like Fortnite

Rockstar is apparently taking a leaf out of Roblox and Fortnite's book for GTA Online 2

According to a recent report, Take-Two and Rockstar Games are planning to take Grand Theft Auto VI in a somewhat unexpected direction, by turning it into the “next big metaverse platform.”

The report in question, by Digiday's Alexander Lee, states that “Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated “GTA” content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game…”

Digiday states that the report has been corroborated by “three industry insiders with knowledge of these meetings,” who wish to remain anonymous.

For those unfamiliar with how Roblox’s custom content works, the majority of the content in the game has been created by the player base themselves.

If you want a good example of what that looks like, here’s a video from YouTuber Dotodoya who tried out a bunch of unique anime titles in Roblox, such as a Dragon Ball card game, a Jump Force mash-up style RPG, and even a Jujutsu Kaisen beat ‘em up - all of which were created by the playerbase.

This focus on creator-produced content does kind of make sense for a game like Grand Theft Auto VI, as a lot of the most popular servers in GTA Online are roleplay-focused.

There’s no word on exactly whether or not GTA Online 2 will come packaged with Grand Theft Auto VI or if it’ll be a standalone title, but I think this report points to it being the latter.

Giving creators the ability to use GTA Online without actually owning GTA VI would lead to more player-created content, which would keep players engaged for longer (and therefore, more likely to spend money on microtransactions such as Shark Cards).

Rockstar Games has refused to comment on Digiday’s story for the time being, so we’ll probably have to wait for a second GTA VI trailer to find out more… which I’m sure is due any day now…
