Grand Theft Auto former dev unveils cancelled gun that fired NPCs, huh

Grand Theft Auto had a gun that fired poor NPCs

Have you ever wanted to use a gun that fired NPCs like bullets? If so, then this weird and wonderful story may pique your interest.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise can certainly be a creative series thanks to its talented team of developers at Rockstar Games. More than just being an open-world cops and robbers game, especially in the latter entries, GTA can get a bit random, whether it's NPC encounters, aliens, Big Foot and everything in between.

Check out the GTA IV trailer below!

Throughout the series, players have had a lot of guns at their disposal, perhaps none more so than in Grand Theft Auto V, at least up to this point. However, there is one gun that never made it into the series and that’s the aforementioned NPC gun.

As reported by PCGamesN, spotted in a blog post of a former Rockstar Games developer, it’s been revealed that GTA IV at some point in its production had a gun that used NCPs as bullets. Obbe Vermeij, who was the technical director at Rockstar North between 1995 and 2009, said that as a way to test collision detection in GTA IV, a rag doll gun was created to fire NPCs in the open world map against buildings to see where they might fall through the scenery. Sadly, this weapon never made it into any version of GTA, but it would be great to find it as a hidden easter egg in the upcoming GTA VI.

What’s more, in GTA III, you might be aware that if you shot the moon it would change in size. Vermeij explained that this was due to the team of developers not being able to decide on the size of the moon in-game, so instead they let players change it for themselves.

“Four artists were at my desk asking me to change the size of the moon. Two of them wanted it smaller to be more realistic. The other two wanted it larger to be more cinematic,” he wrote on his blog.

The next entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto VI still doesn't have a release date. Thankfully, the first official trailer for GTA VI will drop sometime during early December. GTA VI is expected to be released sometime between 2024 and 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
