You may not have heard of The Legend of Khiimori, but it’s perhaps a title you’ll want to check out if you’re a fan of Rockstar Games’ Red Dead franchise.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games of all-time, so I’m not saying what’s on offer here quite lives up to it.
But if you yearn for a realistic, impressive open-world that you can explore on horseback, The Legend of Khiimori is guaranteed to scratch that itch.
Developed by Aesir Interactive and NightinGames and published by Mindscape, The Legend of Khiimori sees players assume the role of a courier rider in 13th century Mongolia.

“13th century Mongolia is the home of history’s best horse riders,” the synopsis begins.
“The land is beautiful and vast, full of wonders and intriguing tales to uncover.
“Be prepared for harsh climates, steep cliffs, and amazing landscapes.
“Keep yourself safe from danger by strategically planning your delivery routes across the wide steppes, over snowy peaks or through the scorching desert.”
Players will need to bond with and train their horses, as they also stock up on crucial supplies ahead of setting out on a new courier mission.

Supplies will inevitably run out, but foraging on the go is also a major part of the gameplay loop as you attempt to survive harsh terrain and weather conditions.
The Legend of Khiimori isn’t without combat either, as you’ll have to defend yourself and your horse from wildlife threats.
“Take on various activities and thrive as a Yam courier rider. You will be tasked with delivering packages and cargo, gathering vital items, and mastering the challenges of the open world,” devs tease.
“Quests will test your capabilities, requiring the right steed, excellent riding mastery, and thoughtful planning, as well as skillful resource management, useful crafting, and keen archery to survive and succeed.”
It’s Available On Steam With a Free Demo Listed
The game is now available on PC in early access and it’s got ‘mostly positive’ reviews already from players.
“This is genuinely exactly what I always wanted to play. It's like RDR2 if it was just a horse game,” wrote one player.
“I love nothing more than managing my horses' needs while I ride across the world. This game is such an inspiration to me and is so calming and fun to play.
“I am so excited to see it continue to grow and expand because this foundation is incredible.”
Others compared the courier loop to Death Stranding.
The Legend of Khiimori will set you back £29.99 or you can try the game’s free demo.
