God Of War Ragnarök beats Elden Ring to scoop first Game of the Year award

We all thought that Elden Ring would sweep up all the Game of the Year awards - until God of War Ragnarök released, that is.

It’s that time of year again and no, I’m not talking about Christmas. As December rolls around, so do those ‘Game of the Year’ lists. For the most part, Elden Ring seemed to have it in the bag this year but if you ask me, Horizon Forbidden West is actually 2022’s best open world game. A certain god threw his hat, or rather axe, into the race in the final stretch though.

Yes, God of War Ragnarök is going head-to-head with Elden Ring this award’s season. Both titles are nominated for the prestigious GOTY award at this year’s (aptly titled) The Game Awards alongside fellow nominees A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Which game are you rooting for? Well, God of War Ragnarök has now officially bagged its first GOTY accolade.

Take a look at God of War Ragnarök’s incredible opening boss fight below.

As reported by Push Square, TIME magazine has published their top 10 games of the year, ranking God of War Ragnarök in the number one spot. What may surprise you is that Elden Ring actually ranked in fourth position. Second was awarded to Horizon Forbidden West whilst The Quarry took third place. The Quarry was personally one of my favourite games of the year so I’m excited to see it getting some love.

It remains to be seen if God of War Ragnarök will continue to reign supreme in GOTY lists. It’s already beaten Elden Ring in terms of nominations at The Game Awards. Ragnarök has landed an impressive 10 nominations. Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West are tied on seven each.

In other God of War Ragnarök related news, a developer recently revealed how one side quest beautifully pays tribute to a fellow dev who passed away during production. The game has also gone on to beat an impressive record previously held by The Last of Us Part II. I have to admit, it’s a stunning game - and definitely ranks in my own top three.
