God of War Ragnarök announces highly requested DLC, available today

God of War Ragnarök is finally getting a New Game Plus mode, as well as an expanded battle arena, new boss fights, and much more.

God of War Ragnarnök was easily the most successful title of 2022 and it looks as if we may all be hopping back into it this weekend. Ever since launch, fans have been wondering when the title will finally gain a New Game Plus mode. Well, today is that day - but that’s not all that’s on the way.

As announced by Sony, a fresh update has rolled out today with New Game Plus being the star of the show. That means you can now restart God of War Ragnarök with all of your weapons, armour etc from your first playthrough intact. You’ll also be gaining access to plenty more new features including additional armour, an increased level cap, new enchantments and more.

Take a look at God of War Ragnarök in action below.

As explained on the PlayStation blog, your equipment, weapons (including the Draupnir spear which you claim quite late in the game), and skills will carry over. They added, “Please note that you will not start the game with access to Sonic and Hex arrows. All areas requiring either those arrows or the Draupnir Spear to access will not unlock until you have reached the point in the main questline in which they become available via the story,” so don’t go too far off the beaten path.

That’s not all. There’s also an expanded battle arena in Niflheim, offering up new enemies to face off against. You can now also battle here as Kratos or Atreus, and pick which companion you’d like to fight alongside you from Freya, Brok, Sindri, Angrboda, Ingrid, Thor and Thrud. Boss fights have been ‘switched-up’ to make for an all new experience too.

In terms of armour, the devs have finally added the cloak from the opening scene as a wearable option (titled Armour of the Black Bear) which unlocks instantly with NG+. There’s also the Spartan Armour which is locked at level one if you really want to go for a hardcore challenge. The Ares Armour from 2018’s God of War will also make a return alongside the new Zeus Armour. Spartan and Ares are available from the Huldra Brothers’ shop. Zeus unlocks after defeating the Valkyrie Queen and the ‘Remnants of Asgard’ on NG+.

We’re still not done. The Spartan Aspis shield has been added and pre-existing armours have been given a new ‘remixed’ lease of life. NG+ also offers a new level cap and enchantments have been overhauled. ‘Burdens’ are a new subset of enchantment. There’s a new Skill Mod Plus progression path, new Platinum Tier Labours, and additional stat gains. In other words, this update will keep you very busy.
