The God of War franchise is long and storied, with several iterations over the decades since its debut on the PlayStation 2, but there’s one game that was likely missed by most fans.
In a recent conversation over on Reddit, regarding the discovery of a Ratchet and Clank mobile game, thought to be lost to the annals of time, one user reminded everyone that there was a God of War mobile game too.
You’d be forgiven for not knowing this even existed, we didn’t remember it, to be completely honest, but there was a side-scrolling 2D God of War game, with Kratos in full vengeance mode.
In the comments on Reddit, user Coolman_Rosso replied, “And here I thought God of War: Betrayal was the only phone game Sony made from that time.”

After doing some digging, it appears the mobile spin-off was actually well received back in 2007, with the story following our hero as he laid waste to enemies, solved puzzles and took on some platforming challenges.
The events of God of War: Betrayal were set between God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War II, and took Kratos to an alternate version of Greece.
Despite being hampered by low-end mobile technology of the time, the game received plenty of praise from the press and fans alike, with one critic saying it was “one of the best mobile games you’ll ever play.”
Long time series writer, Marianne Krawczyk, was behind the story that explained in further detail why Kratos and the Greek Gods had fallen out and become enemies.

Of course, the game is now lost to time, and unless Sony can somehow dig into the vault and find the code, this outing for Kratos can likely only be played via emulation.
Given recent rumours of a 2D metroidvania God of War being in development, this rediscovery seems pretty apt.
