Having a hard time getting hold of a PlayStation 5? That's okay, Sony wants to help make the process easier by sending you exclusive purchase notifications so that you can get ahead of everyone else. The only catch is that a lot of the people getting these notifications actually already own a PlayStation 5. Oops.
Today (Wednesday June 23) Sony plans to sell another batch of consoles straight from the PlayStation Direct website. In what I guess was supposed to be an effort to prevent scalpers and other tricky blighters taking more than they needed, Sony has been sending out exclusive invites to select PSN users. That's great on paper, but a good chunk of the users who have received invites say they've got PlayStation 5.

Twitter's Wario64 was first to bring up the issue. As you can see via the screenshot they shared below, the exclusive invite includes a special link to purchase a PlayStation 5. The link is tied directly to the user's PSN ID so that it can't be used with anyone else. It's not entirely clear how Sony decided who would receive these invites, but it seems to have backfired somewhat.
Multiple users on Twitter have confirmed they received the invite despite owning a PlayStation 5, while PlayStation Lifestyle has also claimed to have heard the same story from a number readers.
Combing through Wario64's replies, I can't actually see a single person without a PlayStation 5 who received an invite to get one. That's hardly definitive of course, but it's not a great look either. There are plenty of folk out there who have been trying for months to get their hands on Sony's latest console, and while sending out exclusive invites clearly comes with the best of intentions, there maybe needs to be a little more thought and care put into who is receiving these invites.
