The Dying Light at the end of the tunnel?

You could be forgiven for assuming that Dying Light 2 isn't coming anymore. The sequel to Techland's excellent open-world zombie parkour game has been in development for years now, been delayed at least once, and has showed off staggeringly little gameplay. Many have started to question whether or not the studio's ambition might have gotten the better of them.

Fortunately, it looks like there is a Dying Light at the end of the tunnel. Late last year developer Techland has promised that 2021 would be the year we finally get an update on the project. A brief message on the game's official Discord server read: "Happy Holidays from the Dying Light team! We've been, er, dying to update you all on how development has been going. We'll have fresh updates about Dying Light 2 in the new year."

Rumours abound that this means 2021 will be the year the game finally releases. Dying Light 2 was originally delayed back in January 2020, and while it never actually had a solid release date, Techland had said multiple times the game would come in the spring of 2020. This didn't happen, obviously, and most of us have assumed ever since that 2021 would see it launch.

In a statement shared on Twitter at the time of the original delay, Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka said: "We were initially aiming for a Spring 2020 release with Dying Light, but unfortunately, we need more development time to fulfil our vision. We will have more details to share in the coming months, and will get back to you as soon as we have more information."

"We apologise for this unwelcome news," he continued. "Our priority is to deliver an experience that lives up to our own high standards and to the expectations of you, our fans."

Now, a leaked retail listing from Australian retailer EB Games that was spotted on Reddit suggests that Dying Light 2 will release on May 25, 2021. That'd be one year on from the game's original Spring release window, which would make sense. Interestingly, while the screen-grabs below clearly show a May 25 release date, the EB Games website itself seems to have updated the listing to change the release date to "TBC 2021".

Whether this was a placeholder that has since been removed to avoid speculation or a genuine sign of when we can expect Dying Light 2 remains to be seen. We know that news is coming soon though, and it's looking more and more likely that 2021 is the year the sequel finally releases.
