'Cyberpunk 2077' Has Sold Over 13 Million Copies, Even With Refunds Factored In

Breathtaking.

It's been a pretty rocky launch for Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt RED's ambitious sci-fi RPG launched in an incredibly rough state on last-gen consoles, which led to a cavalcade of bugs, glitches, and refunds. Sony even made the incredibly rare move of pulling the game from the PlayStation Store entirely, and it seems it won't be going back on sale until the PS4 version of the game is in a more acceptable state.

All of this led to a hellish week for the Polish developer, which saw a whopping 22% shaved off its share prices in just a few days - a nine-month low. There is, however, some hope on the horizon: Cyberpunk 2077 is a massive sales success, and as of the December 20th the game had sold more than 13 million copies across all platforms.

To be clear, this impressive figure actually takes into account the refund requests that CDPR, Sony, and Microsoft starting dishing out days after the game went live. It's not entirely certain just how many refund requests have been made, but I can't imagine CDPR would be too quick to share that kind of information with us. For the most part, at least, it seems players have been willing to wait it out and see what the game is like on consoles after the developer has issued all of the fixes and updates it's promised.

"This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), i.e. the 'sell-through' figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the Company by the publication date of this report in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign," CD Projekt said in a regulatory announcement (thanks, PC Gamer).

Not long after launch, CDPR vowed to fix the issues plaguing the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 and restore its damaged reputation.

"The first substantial set of fixes was released over the weekend," CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński said last week during an emergency investor call. "The next set of fixes will be released within the next 7 days. Big updates are planned for January and February, together with smaller fixes. Of course, PC gamers will also be getting regular updates and fixes. We'll do everything possible to prove that we stick to our values. We truly hope that our efforts will let us rebuild the trust we have lost."

Sure enough, a number of substantial fixes have already rolled out across last-gen consoles to improve the experience somewhat. It still has a long way to go, admittedly, but it's a start.
