Gamers look back on 2018 as a 'god tier' year

Video game fans have been reflecting on past years, and are hailing 2018 as a “god tier” year for quality AAA releases.

There’s been some incredible games released in recent years, and plenty more on the horizon. While 2023 isn’t shy of major releases, a lot of gamers have enjoyed looking back on previous years, most notably 2018, which many believe to be one of the best for fans.

It included Marvel's Spider-Man. The sequel finally swings onto consoles later this year.

Reddit user HumanOverseer created a post titled, “Five Years Ago, the gaming industry decided to drop banger after banger.” Five games accompanied the post: Marvel’s Spider-Man, God Of War (2018), Detroit: Become Human, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Red Dead Redemption 2, all of which are tremendous games in their own rights.

As you’d imagine, the comments were full of gamers praising that year’s games, with the majority of praise unsurprisingly going to Red Dead Redemption 2. “2018 was such a god tier year," one fan said, while another added, “S**t, RDR2 is five years old already? Man, i'm getting old.” Someone else said, "Just finished RDR2 and it was probably my favorite game I’ve ever played story-wise. The end before the epilogue really impacted me, and the epilogue to a lesser degree. It was such an amazingly immersive game.”

Some commenters added to the list and pointed out other brilliant games that were released that year like Celeste, Forza Horizon 4 and Dragon Ball Fighterz. While many agreed it was a great year for gaming, some believed previous years were more substantial, such as one commenter who said: “See this was a good year but NOTHING compared to the year before. [Breath of the Wild], Mario Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cuphead, RE7, Nier Automata, Sonic Mania, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Divinity Original Sin 2, Nioh, Prey, Hollow Knight, Wolfenstein 2, PUBG, Fortnite, Shadow of War, Mario vs Rabbids, South Park TFBH, Evil Within 2, Little Nightmares... and so on.”

In a way, you could look at almost any year and call it a great one for gaming, but there’s no denying some years just hit harder than others. When looking at the recent and upcoming releases for this year like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Starfield and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it makes you wonder if this year will be fondly remembered five years on.
