Marvel’s Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games and originally released for the PlayStation 4 in 2018, swung its way over to PC in August 2022 and landed in rather fine form indeed - here are words to that very effect. And now, inevitably, one smart modder has given us what our stomachs were dreading: a workable and fairly wonderful first-person mode.

As reported by PC Gamer, a modder by the handle of jedijosh920 - presumably the 920th Jedi to be called Josh - has successfully taken the rooftops-thwipping action of the open-world title from a behind-the-butt perspective to one where Spidey’s peepers are effectively our own. The movement is smooth and, unlike a lot of similarly styled mods, our arms don’t appear freakishly disproportionate as we’re crawling around someone else’s brickwork. That said, those fingers might need some attention when Peter gets back to his place, ouch.

Take a look for yourself:

Ignore the title of the video - this obviously isn’t Spider-Man 2. We do know that Insomniac is hard at work on a follow-up to 2018’s game though - the sequel was confirmed in late 2021 and is due for a 2023 release, and will feature Spidey facing off against familiar enemy Venom. There are also rumours that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be playable in the game, and that a third character, possibly Venom itself, will also be controllable for certain sections. But then, 2018’s game let us play as Peter, Miles and Mary Jane Watson during select sequences, so multiple protags wouldn’t be unexpected for the new release

Back to this PC mod though… pretty good, isn’t it? If Insomniac’s next game were to incorporate a first-person view I’m certain that the camera would be steadied so as to avoid unwanted barf and we’d see, y’know, hands that aren't fractured at the knuckles. But for a mod job, this is great stuff, and it’d be a great way to see the game’s representation of New York City from a slower-paced street level. Which rather flies in the face of being Spider-Man, but is less likely to have you seeing your lunchtime sandwiches for a second time, all over your lap.
