Far Cry Meets Valheim With a Dash of Uncharted in New RPG

From the dev who worked on Gears of War and Fortnite

This brand new game looks like a mish-mash of several different well-known video games, which is unsurprising given the games that the developer has worked on in the past.

If you took Valheim’s crafting system, Uncharted’s parkour and exploration mechanics, a colour palette that looks like it was ripped straight out of Far Cry 2, and smushed it all together, you’d probably wind up with something that looks very similar to today’s latest title.

Perhaps this similarity to older games is to be expected, however, considering that the developer behind this one is responsible for bringing the likes of Fortnite, Bulletstorm and Gears of War to life.

Lost Rift is a survival co-op PvP game from developer and publisher People Can Fly that just launched into Early Access on Steam last night, and you'll figure out that I wasn't exaggerating about all those previous comparisons pretty quickly after you take one look at some of the screenshots.

In fact, I can’t figure out if it looks more like the first Far Cry or Far Cry 2, because the art direction seems like it was ripped straight out of the Xbox 360 era (and I mean that in a complimentary way).

Unfortunately, Lost Rift is teetering on the edge of being poorly reviewed at the moment, as it’s currently sitting at a “Mixed” score on Steam, with 66% of the reviews being positive. Here’s what folks on the platform have to say about the game in its current state.

“After 9 hours playing solo, I honestly can’t recommend the game in its current state. The matchmaking desperately needs separate queues for solo players and groups. Right now, if you go in alone, you’re basically cannon fodder”, writes Steam reviewer furinguito.

“Even if you’re highly skilled at FPS games, the armor and helmet damage reduction makes it almost impossible to take down a full team unless they’re already split up… Overall, the game feels heavily tilted in favor of groups, and the devs really need to address solo balance if they want it to be enjoyable for everyone.”

“Good start for a game in Early Access. Creative idea for a game and I hope the team builds more into it in the future. This is a work in progress so expect some clunkyness to it”, commented Steam user Barry Lincoln.

“Optimization for the game and QOL fixes will make this niche game great. Hopefully would like to see a console release as well I could see this taking off big time on the other platforms.”

From what I can tell from reading through the reviews, it sounds like the game isn’t in a bad spot for an early access title.

With a few bug fixes and balancing changes, Lost Rift could wind up being something special down the line. People Can Fly has enough pedigree and experience behind them that I think they’ll get there, given a little more time.
