Fallout 5 is confirmed to be one of Bethesda’s future titles, but the project is shrouded in a lot of secrecy.
We’re several years on from the initial reveal of The Elder Scrolls VI, and we’ve not seen a glimpse of new content since, so don’t expect a Fallout 5 teaser trailer anytime soon.
That being said there’s still a lot that we do know about Fallout 5, and you can read all about it below.
What is the latest Fallout 5 development update?
Back in July Bethesda shared a simple statement on Fallout 5’s development. It said: “Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now.”
Calling it the “long-range destination” obviously means we’re not going to see it for quite some time, but it does mean the project is in pre-production.
Advert
Pre-production basically means the developers are planning and possibly storyboarding the next mainline game. It would also include what standout gameplay features or innovations will be included, and roughly when full-time production could begin.
In the meantime though don’t expect any screenshots, trailers, or even a teaser trailer akin to The Elder Scrolls VI. We reckon Bethesda has learned its lesson from that one.
When could Fallout 5 be released?
This is obviously a tough question to answer as even Bethesda itself probably doesn’t know the answer to it.
Work on the game will likely begin once The Elder Scrolls VI is finished, out the door, and of a stable quality. However as you’ll know from our every important Elder Scrolls VI detail article we still don’t know when that’ll be. It could be 2027, or even 2028 at this rate.
Which platforms could Fallout 5 be released on?
Again, The Elder Scrolls VI will be a good frame-of-reference for this. There was a lot of talk and hearsay about the next Elder Scrolls game being an Xbox-exclusive, but the CEO at the time Phil Spencer squashed those rumours.
Since Asha Sharma came onboard as Phil Spencer’s replacement Xbox has reaffirmed its belief in exclusive games, meaning the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout game might be Xbox and PC exclusives should she follow through on her hints.
Until Xbox confirms or denies that however, we’ll assume it’s a multi-platform game for Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

What do we know about Fallout 5’s setting, story and gameplay?
Bethesda has revealed absolutely nothing about the potential setting, story and gameplay of Fallout 5. All we have to go on for the time being are rumours, which should not be treated as factual information.
Bethesda lead Todd Howard teased that the setting of Fallout 5 could take place chronologically after the events of the Fallout TV series, but is yet to comment on potential locations.
Which Fallout games will arrive before Fallout 5?
Before the release of Fallout 5 there are potential three Fallout games being primed for release.
Bethesda’s nearer-term Fallout project
The two main ones we know about are remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. What we don’t know is what kind of glow-up the games will receive and if they’ll launch at a similar time to each other.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was a visual overhaul that spliced in some quality-of-life improvements, but whether the two aforementioned Fallout games get the same treatment remains to be seen. While both are confirmed to be in development, no release dates have been shared.
Having said that, the fact they’re in production now should mean we’ll see them launch well before Fallout 5.
The other game worth mentioning is the new project being led by Obsidian Entertainment.
The separate Fallout project linked to Obsidian
As part of the latest Fallout news it was confirmed that Obsidian would once again be developing a game for the franchise.
Before you get too excited though, it’s not confirmed to be Fallout: New Vegas 2, nor is it confirmed to be linked to the spin-off in any way.
In all likelihood it’ll be a new game entirely, set in a new region of the United States with separate events to the mainline games. No additional information has been shared at the time writing.
