Fallout 3 new-gen remaster 'runs fantastically', and you can play free

Time to head back into the wasteland

With the current console generation, fans are often finding that older games are getting a little boost in performance, sometimes seeing better textures, or just a smoother framerate.

One fan found that when booting up a Fallout classic, they saw a huge boost, so much so they dashed over to Reddit to investigate why it was so pronounced.

In the thread, they commented, “Why does Fallout 3 perform and look much better than New Vegas on the Xbox Series X?”

They continued, “On the Xbox Series X, Fallout 3 is upscaled to 4K and it runs fantastically. The loading times are very minimal and saving your game takes a split second. But this isn’t the case for NV, it does look upscaled too, but not as good as 3.”

It turns out that Fallout 3 received an Xbox Series X boost when the console debuted, giving the older title a shot in the arm.

This is explained further by another Redditor, who said, “New Vegas is 720p, the OG X360 resolution. F3 was Xbox One X enhanced and got 9x resolution boost in 2017, unlike FNV.”

This means that the third game, rather than the spin-off, got a more thorough boost to improve the game somewhat and give players a new experience.

That isn’t to say that New Vegas missed out, if you’ve not returned to the best Fallout game, in some time.

“NV only got the 60 FPS update,” comments TheFlash1446.

Going further, another user pointed out, “Fallout 3 saw not only a resolution boost, but it saw a texture upscale as well. New Vegas seems to lack not only the upscaling, but it also seems to have no antialiasing.”

If it’s been a while since you last played Fallout 3, now is a good time to get back to the wasteland, until a possible remake, that is.
