Doctor Who getting 'Hollywood makeover' as part of Disney deal, says insider

Doctor Who getting 'Hollywood makeover' as part of Disney deal, says insider

A report claims that Doctor Who will be transformed into an American-style franchise as part of the new Disney partnership.

In case you missed it, last week, alongside the re-appearance of David Tennant as the 14th Doctor (who will be blessing our screens with his presence during the 60th anniversary specials in November 2023), it was also confirmed that the BBC is partnering with Disney to bring Doctor Who to Disney+.

That doesn’t mean that the show is disappearing from the BBC, mind you, but the move aims to introduce Doctor Who to audiences across the globe. The official press release hinted that there could be some significant changes to come, too - something which has now been suggested by a further report.

Take a look at David Tennant's glorious return as the 14th Doctor below.

“Today the BBC and Disney Branded Television - two giants of entertainment - have come together to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise for UK audiences and the rest of the world,” the press release reads. “Under a shared creative vision, they will deliver this quintessentially British show to future generations on an unprecedented scale with Disney+ as the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside the UK and Ireland.”

Exactly what this so-called “global franchise” will look like is a bit of a mystery, but according to a report from The Telegraph (via ComicBook), Disney is apparently planning on giving the show a “Hollywood makeover”. Basically, it sounds like the company wants to transform it into an American-style franchise, which makes sense when you consider that the show will be joining the likes of Marvel and Star Wars when it comes to Disney+.

This is still fairly vague, and obviously, at the time of writing, is totally unconfirmed, so take it with a pinch of salt. Episodes will start airing on Disney+ in late 2023, so there’s a while before we can expect any changes, anyway.
