Dead Rising's Return Teased, Will Follow DR1

Frank West is back!

It looks like Capcom might be making a new Dead Rising game, and for the love of all things, I hope it’s true.

You might be a little less familiar with the Dead Rising series than you are with Capcom’s more flagship franchises like Resident Evil or Monster Hunter, but it’s definitely something that has its fans.

The series made a somewhat decent comeback last year with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, and it seems it may have sold well enough for Capcom to develop a new sequel, as a new report claims that this is the case.

As MP1st reports, Capcom is apparently developing a new game in the Dead Rising series. It won’t be a remake or remaster, but rather a brand new sequel set as “a direct sequel to the first title.”

According to the publication, the new Dead Rising game is being developed under the codename “Rec” and has been in the works since at least 2023.

The game will feature the return of Frank West, which MP1st believes is why the game will follow the first game. However, Frank West was also a main character in Dead Rising 4, so the sequel could also be a continuation of that game.

However, it’s very likely that Capcom will try to retcon or disregard Dead Rising 4 entirely, given that it’s probably the most disliked game in the series.

MP1st also claims to have some details regarding the game’s plot. “We can confirm it will take place in Hollywood, primarily within a massive, enclosed movie studio lot.

“We also know the title’s main villain will be an extravagant and deranged film director who forces Frank and other survivors into various trials, all in the pursuit of filming his ‘perfect movie’.”

Following the disappointing sales and poor reception of Dead Rising 4 in 2016, Capcom cancelled what was originally going to be Dead Rising 5 after it shut down Capcom Vancouver in 2018.

Following this, the series lay dormant for eight years before Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was released last summer, which was a remake of the original game using Capcom’s RE Engine and introduced various graphical and technical improvements.

Fans have hoped that the success of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster could lead to other games in the franchise receiving similar treatment, particularly Dead Rising 2.

Dead Rising 2 (and its sibling title, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record) is often seen as the best game in the series due to the addition of combo weapons, a larger open-world, and co-operative gameplay.
